TENNIS Emerson Chasing Grand Slam

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) BRISBANE, January 13. Queenslander Roy Emerson beat Fred Stolle, New South Wales, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, in the Australian national men’s singles tennis championship final today.

Emerson took only 77 minutes to outclass Stolle. It was Emerson's third national singles title. He won his first by beating Queenslander and 1062 “grand stem” champion Rod Laver, now a professional, in four sets In Melbourne in 1901, and his second by beating Queenslander Ken Fletcher in Adelaide last year. Stolle lost last year’s Wimbledon final to America’s Chuck McKinley. Emerson took one hour for the first two sets, and 17 minutes to win the third and the title. Emerson out-served, outvolleyed and out-drove Stolle. Emerson went through the entire tournament without dropping a set His aim now is to match Laver’s grand slam—the Australian, French, Wimbledon and American championships. “I’m flat out now to win all
