SIX TO GO TO SCOTT BASE
Departure Next Saturday Six men will leave Christchurch by air on Saturday for Scott Base, two to winter there and four to pay short visits. The two who will winter at Scott Base are Mr G. Lewis, the senior scientist at the base, who will be wintering for a second time, and Mr D. R. Millar, a technician whose interest is in the magnetic and seismological fields.
The four who will visit the base are Mr R. McNaughton, of the Nuclear Science Institute, Wellington, who it is believed will study radioactive deposits, in particular cartoon 14; Mr A. Allan, of the Dominion Physical Laboratory, whose interest is upper-atmosphere instrumentation; Mr Craig, an Englishman who is studying here on a fellowship scheme and is interested in oceanography; and Mr R. Thomson, the deputy-leader of the summer season. Mr Thomson returned to the Dominion at the end of December for treatment at the Christchurch Hospital of an injured shoulder. Although the main evacuation is planned for the end of February or early March, two groups will come out about the end of this month. These will be the Victoria University party and the northern field party. Some members of the southern field party returned to the Dominion aboard the aircraft which brought the commander of the United States Navy Antarctic support force (RearAdmiral J. R. Reedy) to Christchurch on Saturday.
