ADVERTISING SUCCESS

Wool Campaign In US’ (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 13. An increase of 22 per cent in the sales of woollen suits and slacks had taken place last year in the United States, and this could be directly attributed to the effects of direct advertising, said the chairman of the South African Wool Board (Dr. J. G. van der Wath) on his arrival in Wellington today. Dr. van der Wath, who will lead the South African delegation to the Internationa] Wool Secretariat conference starting here on Wednesday, was commenting on the relative importance of promotion and research. "Promotion and research complement each other,”' he said. “You can’t say one is more important than the other. “Of course, we cannot approve of mixing wool and synthetics,” he said, but he admitted synthetics had strengthened socks and made them last longer. He could not deny that synthetics were often able to do a great deal to boost sales of wool. But the demand for pure wool socks was increasing in South Africa. Asked whether the secretariat intended to extend its membership, Dr. van de Wath said: “We have discussed the possibility of bringing South American countries in, but frequent changes of government are a problem there.”
