MISSION TO JAPAN
‘Kennedy May Meet Soekarno’ (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, January 13. President Johnson is considering using the AttorneyGeneral (Mr Robert Kennedy) as a globe-trotting trouble-shooter, the Washington “Post” said today. The “Post” said Mr Johnson had a proposal on his desk, awaiting the final decision, which would send the Attor-ney-General to Japan to meet President Soekarno of Indonesia, who is expected there soon on a vacation. The object would be to prevail on the Indonesian leader not to carry out his threat to try to crush the new Malaysian Federation. Mr Kennedy handled some similar chores for the late President Kennedy, his brother. One such trip took him to Indonesia where, the “Post” said, he made an excellent impression on President Soekarno. Mr Kennedy also would be expected to report to Mr Johnson whether foreign aid should be continued for Indonesia. The Foreign Aid Bill recently signed by Mr Johnson requires him to make a positive investigation that aid for Indonesia would be in the best interests of the United States. Otherwise, it will lapse.
‘Flag Flying Was Blunder’
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, January 13. The "New York Times” said in an editorial today that “a major blunder” had been committed in letting American high school students flout the international agreement on flags. “As the events that followed conclusively prove, what these misguided youngsters thought was an act of patriotic devotion to the flag of the United States was actually a provocation that played directly into the hands of all in Latin America who .oppose the United States,” it said.
