BID TO BAR GOLDWATER

Views Disturb Republicans (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Jan. 11. A stron g but u nco-ord inated move to bar Senator Barry Goldwater, of Arizona, from winning the Republican presidential nomination is building np in influential Republican circles, according to the North American Newspaper Alliance. The movement gathered strength when party leaders felt the assassination of President Kennedy and the elevation of Mr Lyndon Johnson to the Presidency had badly damaged Senator Goldwater’s chances. Its leaders were further disturbed by Senator Goldwater’s comments on a nation-wide television show last Sunday, when he advocated scrapping the Nuclear Test-ban Treaty and selling the Tennessee Valley Authority. As a result, Republican leaders are looking to either of two men to head the Republican ticket in 1964—with resignation and reluctance to the former Vice-President, Mr Richard Nixon, in spite of a lack of conviction that he can win, or to Governor William Scranton, of Pennsylvania. For Mr Scranton to capture the nomination, however, the party professionals say, he must go out and make a name for himself.
