ON-COURSE DOUBLE

Glenurquhart, Dulcie May

Dulcie Mae and Glenurquhart were a popular on-course double at Washdyke on Saturday. Considering both were the favourites in their respective races, the Levels Handicap No. 1 and No. 2, the double dividend of £l2 15s 6d for £1 was a lucrative one. Dulcie Mae, a member of E. R. Edge’s team at Chertsey, had cleared maiden class at the first of her two starts at the Kurow meeting last. Saturday week. Glenurquhart’s victory was his second in succession. He had been successful for his Methven owner-trainer, Mr P. A. Watson, at Ashburton on Boxing Day. Dulcie Mae received a perfect trail behind the pacemaker, Royal Melody, till the home turn in the Levels Handicap No. 1. E. R. Edge pulled her but to challenge at the straight entrance and she responded-best to a hard drive to win by a head. Space Cadet ran a sound race for third but he was three lengths behind Royal Melody. Space Cadet was on the inner and about midfield till the home turn. Once in the clear he ran on solidly and out-finished Forward Boy, equal fourth till the home turn, by half a length. Dora Doone, one of the slower beginners, led in the others. Mystery Jim,'- La Rossa, Radiant Meadow. Kelso Lady and Real Hennessey were also slow away. Never Behind Glenurquhart led all the way to win the Levels Handicap No. 2. He was followed to the straight by Terri Lee, Rangipo, Megaton, Our Kay and For Certain. Once straightened for the run home M. A. Watson gave Glenurquhart a little more rein and he drew away to win by three lengths from Megaton which out-ran Terri Lee by a length for second. In a tight finish for fourth. Roa Roa out-finished Rangipo by half a head and Trudy Helen was a head back sixth. For Certain was next, a length further back. She just shaded- Kinsella and Why Not. Trudy Helen and Kinsella had run together in' the middle of the field till the home turn and Why Not had been fourth on the inner to the straight. Kinsella, Tivoli and Rolex ruined their chances at- the start and Ruapuna broke inside the first 100 yards.
