Tavistock Pays £136 For Victory In Sprint

There were some handy-sized dividends at Washdyke on Saturday but nothing approached Tavistock’s £136 16s 6d for a win in the Taiko Handicap, the main sprint race on the programme. Place supporters of Mr O. Taylor’s Worthy Monarch gelding received £2l 13s for £l. Tavistock was the 19/18 favourite of 20, in this, his first race from I. S. Sutherland’s Duntroon stable.

Sutherland had Tavistock well positioned from the start and he tracked the pacemaker, Zadios, around to the straight. Zadios still had a short break on the others running to the furlong but she began to feel the strain a little closer to home. In the last 50 yards Tavistock and Admiral Adios came strongly on Zadios’ right and Tavistock responded best to a hard drive to beat Admiral Adios by half a head. Zadios was a similar distance back third. Admiral Adios had been in the middle of the field six furlongs out but a big run carried him up to the second line alongside Tavistock on the home turn.

Johnny Supreme, which had been fairly close up all the way, was three parts of a length back fourth. My Share was a strong finisher for fifth, a length and a half back. He came from, one of the tail-end positions in the last half-mile. The three most popular fancies—Flying Ailsa, Happy Sam and Flying Over—all made mistakes at the start. The other early breakers were Rona’s Choice, Disperse, Stormy Lad and Borodin, Gay Lynn Easily Gay Lynn overcame an early break to win the Kingsdown Handicap at her leisure Messrs J. E. Smith and W. R. Robertson’s Smokey Hanover mare, along with the majority of the field, broke early in the contest but she recovered fairly quickly and chased Little Hussy and Madam Scott till the home turn. Once in line for the run home Gay Lynn pulled'away to win by five lengths. Seven Nights, which led the chase after the first three most of the way but was in a fairly long gap early, outfinished Little Hussy for second by a length and a half. Belmartial, which began slowly but improved to be fourth equal on the home turn, battled on to hold that place a length back. The rest were led in by Theodora, another well out of the contest in the early stages. The favourite. Remember When, broke with five and a half furlongs to go and again in the straight. She finished sixth. Maiden Events Legal Gain and Medico won the respective races for maiden pacers, the Fairlie Handicap No.’s 1 and 2. Both were confidently supported after placed performances in their last races. .Legal Gain, a member of C. S. Donald’s team, was the 3/3 favourite of 18 in the First Fairlie Handicap and Medico was a firm each-way fancy for the Fairlie Handicap No. 2. The latter is trained at Templeton by D. G. Jones. R. P. Nyhan had Legal Gain handily placed all the way in the Fairlie Handicap No. 1. He had Mr L. A. Officer’s Thunder On colt three GERALDINE HANDICAP, £425 ; 2:17 class; IJm—Adio Star, Anama, Anterior. places, back on the inner behind Caught Napping and Moyra Lass till the straight. Legal Gain was brought three wide to challenge outside the furlong and he pegged Caught Napping back, a little closer to home and beat him by half a neck. Seafield Scott, which shared the same line as Legal Gain and Laurel On till the home turn, outfinished Moyra Lass by a neck for third but he was two lengths behind Caught Napping. Joanvale made ground in the latter stages for fifth. Aiming High fell at the end of a furlong and Fallout, Main’s Lady and Rola Dillon were brought down. Halton Castle was pulled up. Judith Pride, Lagmhor and Bossa . Nova all lost, their chance at the start. Medico was never far from the pace in the Fairlie Handicap No. 2. On the home turn he shared the third line w>ith Young Lad, behind Lord Cecil and Scottish Advance. The co-leaders then were Guyfa and Misty Haze.

In the run from- the furlong it was Medico all the way. He* won by two • lengths from Scottish Advance, which ran on solidly once she found racing room on the inside about the furlong. Gold Donette, which was in the line behind the winner most of the way, nosed Lord Cecil out of third in the last stride but she was two lengths behind Scottish Advance. The best of the others was Smokey Chimes. He made up a fair amount of ground in the last six fur-, longs.

home turn when making a run after the leader. Lightning Scott saved his placing by a nose from Nimble Grattan, which was running on after being fairly handy all the way. The best of the others was Elpestre, which was close up all the way and finished in a break.
