ON A SMALL FARM
Details were given last week of production on a North Canterbury farmlet of 37 acres of light land in mainly subterranean clover and ryegrass. It was given a dressing of 21cwt of superphosphate in the spring. The farmlet has been carrying 106 Corriedale ewes, mainly two-tooths, bought at the Hawarden ewe fair. Mated to Southdown and South Suffolk rams these produced a modest 134 lambs. The first draft of 87 taken about three weeks ago returned £226 4s at 52s each. The ewes clipped 1211 b each when skirted and with the fleece bringing 64d a pound, the first pieces 60d, and bellies 44d, the wool cheque came to £338. The remaining 47 lambs are expected to return about 50s and if this is realised the proceeds of the small enterprise for the season will total £6Bl 14s.
