RACING Stablemates Fancied In Double At Washdyke
The Riccarton trainer, J. S. Shaw, will probably saddle the most popular combination for the totalisator double at Washdyke today.
Newbrook will represent the stable in the St. Andrews High-weight Handicap, the first leg of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s double.
The second leg, which will be the Pentlow Intermediate Handicap, is generally expected to result in a victory for Marlborough.
Newbrook. which carries his trainer’s colours, is noted best for his ability as a sprinter. But that is only because he has seldom been tried over more ground. This tune be will be going a mile end 35 yards and if he has held the form which has already given him two sprint wins and two minor places this season he should be the hardest to beat. Newbrook has 9-8, the same weight as Ashleigh which was placed as a miler at Greymouth the start before last ,
Although Zmder lacks solid form since he resumed at Trentham in October one of his best runs under topweight of 9-9 would be more than adequate to give him victory. Consistent Sailorman will be another high on the list of fancied runners. He has been a consistent place-getter since his Claude Stock Memorial victory at Oran in October. Of the tail-enders Gabbler, Wellington and Kastanea make most appeal. Gabbler compiled an impressive sequence of winning runs early in the season before the tracks firmed up.
Wellington was the runnerup in each of two starts among the open sprinters at Omoto earlier this month and has not raced since Kastanea has not raced since May. But his first run is often his best and recent
track gallops will have proved valuable if he gets into the finish.
Marlborough failed to improve on his first-up win at Bangiora on Labour Day in three starts at the New Zealand Cup meeting last month. His best effort at Riccarton was a sixth in a strong field of hack milers in the Seymour Handicap on the final day. A run of equal strength would make him very hard to tnatrh in the Pentlow Intermediate Handicap. Castle Flight Out The possibility of a Riccarton victory in the South Canterbury Challenge Stakes strengthened yesterday when the smart Gore-trained Castle Flieht dropped out of the fie'd. Magician is almost certain now to dominate betting jn the first running of this feature race for three-year-oLds Most opposition for Magican could come from Valu- • te. another Riccarton - tra.ned colt, and Carpenter a well-performed three-year-old from A. E. Didham's stable at Wingatui Neither Magician nor Carpenter were suited by the g-easy ground on the first day of the Dunedin Cup meeting at Wingatui last Saturday but they will have firm, fast footing for galloping today.
Kurow Gallops At Oamaru
IN 2 Press Association) OAMARU December 27 The Kurow Jockey Club's meeting will be held on the Oamaru course on Saturday. January 4 A statement released by the secretary of the Kurow Jockey Ch*. Mr H. L Ross, said:
After an inspection of the hack at Kurow by a stipendiary steward of the New Zealand Racing Conference, the committee decided to apply to the Oamaru club to race at Oamaru on January
This action is necessary -After the complete resowing of the track and the fact that the turf is not far enough * vanced. due to adverse seasonal conditions
‘‘ A further factor which caused lelay in growth is that the Waitaki irrigation scheme is not yet providing water which could have enabled irrigation of the track ’
