WHITES MAY LEAVE

Bechuanaland Politics

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, Dec. 27. Many white settlers in the British Protectorate of Bechuanaland are planning an exodus because of possible independence, the Johannesburg newspaper "Die Vaderland” said yesterday. Bechuanaland, bordering South Africa, has a population of 300,000 Africans and 3000 whites. Most of the small white farming community are South African, many of them Afrikaners. The newspaper said whites in Bechuanaland were concerned that schools would become multi-racial on January 1.

“The announcement is regarded as a forerunner of total equality which, it goes without saying, will follow an earlier announcement of a new constitution and of independence for the territory at the end of next year,” it added.
