Obituary

THE REV. E. C. ATKINSON

The death occurred in Christchurch on Christmas Day, after a short illness, of the Rev. Edwin Clare Atkinson, an Anglican priest. He was aged 74 years. Born in Yorkshire, Mr Atkinson began his ministry by graduating from the Seabury Divinity School, Minnesota, U.S.A., in 1914. After serving in parishes in America and England he came to New Zealand in 1929, where he was vicar of Okains Bay and Halswell. On his return to England in 1936 he served in Sussex.

During the Second World War Mr Atkinson did chaplaincy work with the troops stationed near him. After the war he returned to the Christchurch diocese where he was vicar rf Rakaia, and then Amberley.

Mr Atkinson retired to Nelson in 1960 but later returned to Christchurch where he continued to work and serve others. He is survived by his wife and son.

CAPTAIN C. M. ANDREWS

Captain C. M. Andrews, a former Shaw Savill ship’s master, died recently at the age of 81. Captain Andrews joined the company as fourth officer of the Maori in 1906 and served in many of the company’s vessels. His first command was the old Karamea, in 1917. Other commands were the Raranga, Waimana. Mahana. Mahia, and Zealandic. His last command was the Waiwera, which was sunk in the Atlantic by torpedo on June 29. 1942. All the crew, with the exception of the chief engineer and baker, who were killed by the explosion of the second torpedo, were saved, although some of the survivors were in lifeboats for nearly a week. Later in the same year, Captain Andrews obtained a temporary appointment with the Sea Transport Department, and in May, 1946. he was released from this position to work in the cargo department at the Royal Docks. London He retired m November, 1947. Captain Andrews first went to sea under sail, in 189& He served as an apprentice and second mate in the Jessomene and Mylomene.
