Joint Holder Defeated

O. Sarapu, one of the joint holders of the New Zealand championship, won his games in the first round of the national chess congress, which opened at Auckland tonight. The other holder of the championship. R. J. Sutton, was defeated.
The only blind player taking part. T. J. Free, of Point Chevalier. also won his game in the reserve championship. Play will continue until January 8. Results were:—
