ANTHOLOGY
Shouts And Murmurs. A selection from the “Observer.” Hodder and Stoughton. 319 pp.
The independent London Sunday newspaper, the “Observer,” is not everyone’s cup of tea—or coffee—for every Sunday breakfast. Pitched on an intellectual level, it can infuriate as well as attract. But it is never boring, and about a hundred reasons for the “Observer’s” capacity to attract, interest, and to stimulate thought, are given in this collection of pieces from the paper. Here is indeed some magnificent writing on the recent English scene, and some pieces of excellent reporting from the wide world. It would be invidious to select among them; sufficient to say that the careful selection of this anthology succeeds in showing the character of one of England's most stimulating journals. For discriminating readers this anthology can be warmly recommended as a bedside book.
