Otago Bowling Hinders N. Canterbury Batsmen
North Canterbury needs 95 runs and has five wickets in hand in its Hawke Cup cricket match against Central Otago.
At the end of play at Rangiora yesterday North Canterbury had 132 for the loss of five wickets in answer to Central Otago’s first innings total of 226.
Central Otago batted first and lost two wickets, R. Long and S. McKnlght, quickly. A partnership between C. Buttar and R. Golden carried the score to 78 before Buttar was lbw.
R. Golden led the batting with 94, mainly as a result of missed catches. The slow left arm North Canterbury bowler, A. F. Wright, took two for 23. Eleven of his 18 overs were maidens. His balls had good length and the Otago batsmen found them hard to get away. E. Bailey, bowling consistently, took three for 56.
Very tight bowling from Central Otago made slow scoring a feature of North Canterbury’s innings. One of the
openers, P. Mullins, was the topscorer with 42. E. Bailey, who ran himself out for 17, was at the crease for 100 minutes. G. Harford took three for 29 and his bowling was very hard to score from. C. Buttar bowled the only over from which double figures were scored. CENTRAL OTAGO First Innings R. Long, b B. Cobden .. 2 C. Buttar, lbw, b R. Booker 49 S. McKnight, b E. Bailey, c I. Sail .. .. 0 R.
