WALSH BACK AS CAPTAIN

85 pc Recovery From Injury

[From A. R. VEYSEY, N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent] BRISTOL, December 15.

It will be a double event for P. T. Walsh on Tuesday. He will step on to the Rugby field after a break of more than six weeks and will captain New Zealand for the first time in an international career spanning eight years. Walsh, who badly injured a knee against Aberavon on November 2, has had a long hard road to recovery and it is a tribute to him that he is able to take the field, even at this stage. The award of the captaincy to the former New Zealand Maori captain is a team tribute.

T. P. McLean says the match could be the end of the road in Rugby for Walsh if his leg fails or the renewal of a career marked by an unusual devotion to the game. He says the selectors made a calculated gesture in choosing a man who they knew was only 85 per cent fit.

Walsh knows that Dr G. Rowley, the Cardiff specialist, does not believe he has a chance of improving on this state before the end of the tour.

Walsh, nevertheless, is desperately keen to try himself out. Sunday was a day of rest for the All Blacks but Walsh was out training.
