£336,000 Lower Waitaki Plan Decision Today

(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, December 1(5.

The Waitaki Catchment Commission will consider the adoption of the lower Waitaki £336.000 regime channel classification scheme at its monthly meeting tomorrow. The classification has already been accepted. The chairman (Mr J. Scott, of Godley Peaks) says in his annual report that overriding all other work for tire commission has been the preparation of the proposal, the classification of benefiting properties being the biggest job. This was undertaken by Messrs R. V. Maxwell and J. W. T. Anstey. Reactions at meetings in Kurow on August 12 and December 2 were “extremely favourable,” and could be summed up as follows: “Get on with the job even if we have, for a period, to face double rates to achieve this end,” says the report. Further plans would include advertising for objections (taking about two

months) and the commission should be in a position to i start levying rates this com-! ing financial year. In the meantime, a £6009! job is being carried out on: the frontages of Messrs Bell.; Taylor and Company to relieve an urgent position that i has developed. “This will bej ‘part and parcel’ of the ulti-i mate regime scheme, and' local contribution of £250! will be reimbursed from first-year rates,” the report continues. Other works included Ahuriri river, Awahokomo stream, Kurow creek, Maerew'henua river, Awamoko stream, Cass, Godley and Gray's rivers, and Elephant hill and Waihuna streams. A soil conservation survey of part of the Lincoln College endowment reserve was completed. Conservation run plans were completed for Glen Cary and Otematapaio stations involving 8000 acres and 19.000 acres respectively, and base maps were prepared for conservation run plans

for Hakataramea and Mount Dalgety stations. Work began for a conservation run plan for the property of Mr R. Rickman. Waihaorunga. Fire Breaks A subsidy was approved for a strategic fire break in the Otekaike district, and a route was surveyed and costed for such a break in the Dansey pass area. “This proposal seems likely to lapse through lack of support from runholders.” the report says.
