Survey Of Coal Uses In Auckland

AUCKLAND, December 16.

Competition against coal by other fuels, principally oil and electricity, has sparked a survey of the quality of coal in the Huntly area and its use in Auckland.

The survey is expected to take six weeks. It is being conducted by the University of Otago faculty of technology and undertaken by Mr A. M. Anderson, senior lecturer in mining at the university, Dr. J. B. Stott, senior lecturer in coal-mining research. and Mr C. Stack, fuel technologist of the Mines Department The study has the support of the State mines. Clen Afton Collieries, Ltd., and the North Island Coal Merchants’ Federation. Dr. Stott is carrying out the quality control study in the Huntly area and Mr Anderson is doing the market survey in the Auckland area A special questionnaire is being sent to all industrial users of coal in the Auckland area, as well as some firms which do not use coal. Among searching questions it asks the type of plant used, why any change was made

from using coal, details of boiler installations, the type and size of coal ordered and invites criticism of the coal. Another questionnaire is being sent to 500 homes, selected at random, asking questions about the use of coal in the home. If the result of the survey in Auckland and Huntly is shown to be worth while it will be extended to the Wellington area and other parts of New Zealand.
