Longevity
Sir. —It has been disordered that there are. in one small area in Russian Georgia, 2100 men over 100 years old. Medical investigators have recently found some of the recipe for their healthy, happy condition: deep rhythmic breathing in clean air, giving zest for simple food; regular meals, hard work; no tobacco, no alcohol; no rude sleep interruptions such as European city-dwellers suffer continually from alarm clocks, etc. Their diet staples are wheat bread, cheese from sheep’s milk, butter and honey. We have the food ingredients. Could we but assimilate these in a similar environment of clean sir! Could any city-dweller in Christchurch joyfully indulge from early childhood for 100 years in deep-rhythmic breathing among fumes, smoke, and food adulterants? Hard work, health and happiness result in longevity in clean air.—Yours, etc., SIMPLE LIFE. December 13. 1963.
