APPEAL BY FATHER

Boy Held In Quarantine

(N.Z. Press Association)

NELSON. December 12.

Douglas Hindson, the 16-year-old schoolboy who has been held in quarantine at Fremantle as the result of his refusal to be vaccinated, is expected to be released on Saturday morning. He will then be able to continue his journey from South Africa to New Zealand, where he is to spend his holidays with his parents, Mr and Mrs B. R. Hindson. who live at Richmond. In a letter to the Australian Director-General of Health this week, Mr Hindson advised that in his family history there was a “most severe case of complications following vaccination for smallpox.”

He said he had been granted exemption from vaccination from birth for all his children and since this time various medical advisers had warned against vaccination. Mr Hindson sent a copy of the letter to the Prime Minister (Sir Robert Menzies) to whom he appealed last week for his son's release.

On Tuesday Mr Hindson sent a cable to the DirectorGeneral of Health appealing to him to exercise “discretionary clemency in the present exceptional circumstances and to release Douglas immediately.” A copy of the cable was also sent to Sir Robert Menzies.
