Records Should Fall At Memorial Meeting

Many of the country’s leading athletes will be competing in the John Cameron Memorial athletics meeting, to be held at Rugby Park on Tuesday evening, and the likelihood of both New Zealand and Canterbury records falling in several events appears quite strong.

The meeting, which is being organised jointly by the Anglican, Marist, Shirley, Toe H and University Athletic Clubs, will provide some first-class competition.

Among the long list of “name” competitors are D. Norris (Auckland), the current holder of the New Zealand men’s long jump and hop, step and jump titles and records, Mrs A. Mclntosh (Auckland), the women’s «0 metres hurdles and 100yds champion, M. Speden (Wellington), the decathlon champion, D. Jowett (Otago), the New Zealand Universities long jump champion, and C.

McGuire, the Otago sprint champion. Norris is expected to attempt to break his New Zealand records for the king jump ana hop, step and jump If he is successful, it will be the first national record to fall in Canterbury this season. However, he will have some strong opposition from Speden and Jowett, who have both been performing particularly well in recent jumps.

The sprint events should be particularly close. McGuire. Jowett, Norris, A. G. Steel, L. Jones and D. McKenzie, tlie last three all of Christchurch, are entered and the possibility of a Canterbury record falling is considerable.

In the women’s events, the 14-year-old Westport sprinter, Miss Kerry Ann Croswell. who at present holds the Canterbury sprint title, will be competing. A special attempt is to be made in the New Zealand women's penitathl.n record by Mesdames V. You»ig and L. Wilson, both of Christchurch. Miss L. Curtis, the New Zealand high Jump diempion will also be cante&ti.ig this i event.

G. Pyne, the New Zealand three-mile champion, has been entered for the two-mile race. He will be matched against M. Jones, the N*W Zealand junior three-mile champion, and R. Reekie, who was runner-up to Joi.er. The New Zealand discus and shot out champion. R. Tait, will also ba making an appearance.
