RACING Picright May Win Hororata Cup Again

Picright and Mhor, from Riccarton, and the Waimatfetrained Personify are generally expected to battle for honours in the Hororata Cup, first leg of the double at the Hororata Racing Club’s annual meeting tomorrow. Picright will probably be the popular fancy. Messrs R. W. Smith and E. J. Woodbury’s Pictavia gelding has no winning runs on his record this season, but he showed that he was fast approaching peak form again by racing soundly in each of his three races at the New Zealand Cup meeting last month.

When Picright struck a aoMd patch of middle-dutance form about this tune last year. one of ha* victone* included the Hororata Cup. Picngnt won last year’s coate* under 8-1. Thi* time he ha* 8-2, 41b Less than Mhor and 121 b lea* than Personify, which i* top-weight. Mhor rounded off a solid , patch of placed form by winning the Rangiora Handicap at toe North Canterbury maetaig on Labour Day. His only race meantime was the Feodalton Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting ' He finamed second to Royal' Bid, one of Southland's best •young stayers. ' Personify marred a sequence of good placing* when be failed rather badly in the Fendaitoci Handicap, i ha* only race at the New Zea- i land Cup meeting. Before ) that be had finished third to; -Mhor and Gey Defoe at 1 Rangiora on Labour Day. He wa* the beat of Boundless's rivals in the North Canterbury Gold Cup three days • earlier and also finished third ; to Sailorman and Julloch in - die Chude Stock Memorial at • Oren she previous week. < Julloch and Gay Defoe will be two of Personify’* rivals ;ag»in this time and both of them will carry 71b leas than •‘the top-weight Consistent Julloch will be trying to •taprove on an impressive list fcOf minor place*. Third ■ the ••worst he has been in his last .four starts. The Claude Stock Memorial ■t Oran in October was Jul- . loch's Latest race, but Gay ■ Defoe has more recent form. 'He was a last-start tlurd to Palisade and Royal News in the Metropolitan Handicap Con the final day of the New -Zealand Cup meeting.

Form at Hokitika and Greymouth recently will have proved valuable if Meanderr< and Ashleigh take a hand in the finish.

Meandering has been a good winner in provincial handicap fields ths season and wac first and third in two starts at Hokitika last month.

Ashleigh is still in the early stages of a fresh campaign. He had two starts at the Greymouth meeting and showed he was coming to form quickly by chasing Brown Watch home in the main race at Omoto last Saturday. Ashleigh is one of two form runner* G. R. Pelling will saddle. The other is Lady York, the Otaio Plate winner at Riccarton at her last start. She could be the best of the light-weights. The best of the other* will 'Probably be Sailorman. This cnustetent Kurdistan gelding will strengthen the potability of a South Canterbury victory. He has been placed in ■ four of his five races since winning at Orari in October.

Second Leg

Recent form pointe strongly to the chances of Approval and Gabbler in the H. A. KniglH Memorial Handicap, second leg of toe double. A very sound sprint dose up on Approval's record was a second to Newbrook at Rangiora in October. His only race meantime was in the open sprint art Motukarara where he tried for an all-the-way win, but was run down in the last furlong. Gabbler has not been successful since the tracks firmed, but he has been running well just the same and began his campaign at the New Zealand Cup meeting with a fourth to Bellarook.

Llanmad and company in the Stewards’ Handicap. That type of effort would be more than adequate to gain him victory in this field. Gabbler is one of the lightweigbts. He has 7-9, 41b less than Approval and 201 b less than the top-weight, Double. Double is the class horse of the field, but she has been right out of form in her recent races. If she has freshened since the New Zealand Cup meeting even 9-1 would not keep her out of the finish. Gold View’s best is also very good. This is her first race since the Winter Cup in August and she might shape fadrly well fresh. The best of the others could be the Riccarton lightweights, On Account and Picca Leigh. They have no recent race-form of worth, but have both galloped well in training lately. Double fields, with form, are: 1.35 p.m. HORORATA CUP, £550: lOf; 120yds.

Ichtar Centre Of Interest “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, Dec. 12. The Awapuni visitor leister, a three-year-old with engagements at the Auckland summer meeting, went easily in his first gallop at Takanini this morning. Ridden by B. F. Andrews, he ran half a mile 20 feet out on the No. 1 grass in 51 3-5. Ichtar is in the Queen Elizabeth H Plate at Pukeknhe tomorrow. If he goes well he is bound to enter strongly into discussions on the Great Northern Derby at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. Golden Muse, from New Plymouth, an arrival at Ellerslie last week-end after her game third in the Thames Valley Stakes at Te Aroha, ran six furlongs effortlessly on the plough yesterday tn 1:19. She was ridden by her trainer. F. S. HilL At Te Aroha, Golden Muse would have been closer but for being galloped on. She looks in solid condition for the Queen Elizabeth II Plate. Blue Beard To Be Spelled “The Press” Spacial Service MATAMATA, Dec. 12. The good galloper Blue Beard has gone sore and been withdrawn from the Auckland Cup and all Ellerslie engagements. He will be turned out. His trainer, R. F. Cole, h-.d further bad luck when Fair Vision started to feel the hard tracks after his latest run. He is also to be spelled.
