Liquor At Lancaster Park
Sir.—l was amazed to read in “The Press” that both the Victory Park Board and the Canterbury Cricket Association have approved an application for a licence to sell! intoxicating liquor at Plun-1 ket Shield fixtures. The I memory ot these men must j indeed be short, as finance, to purchase Lancaster. Park j was contributed by thousands of amateur sportsmen.' many of whom, like myself. I are not teetotallers, but abhor > the thought that alcoholl should be consumed in the i vicinity of amateur sporting i fixtures. To think that the! leisurely atmosphere of first-1 class cricket should be marred i by the presence of a liquor marquee! I am convinced that it would not be in the interests of the thousands of schoolboys who .attend these fixtures. May I remind these gentlemen that Lancaster Park came info being as a memorial park, dedicated to the memory of good amateur sportsmen, not a location for erecting a profit-making concern.—Yours. etc.. A. E JOHNSTON. ! December 11, 1963.
