COEN HAS VISITORS
Five Cars In Main Street (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter) BRISBANE. Coen, with a population of 77 is having a tourist boom. Recently, five inter-state vehicles were seen in the main (practically the only) street of this hamlet in far northern Queensland. This would not be unusual almost anywhere else in Australia, but Coen is one of the most difficult centres to reach in the country. Situated high up in Cape York, it is 600 miles from the nearest State border (Northern Territory) and 1200 miles from the next nearest (New South Wales). That, of course, is as the erow flies. By road it would be much longer, and the traveller has a much more difficult journey than the crow.
At present, the only road to Coen is almost hnpassable and travellers have been advised to use four-wheel drive vehicles. After the visit of the five inter-state vehicles, the local policeman. Sergeant Tom Newman, said: ‘The influx of tourists is getting bigger every year.’’
