FIRST SHOW IN NEWHALL

Display Of Lilies The first public display to be held in the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s new hall was the annual noncompetitive exhibition of lillies arranged by the New Zealand Lily Society. It opened yesterday and will close at 5 p.m. today. The secretary of the Lily Society (Mr G. Parkins) said that the entry of more than 100 was surprising after recent frosts and the generally bad season for lilies. Lilies ranged in colour from pure white to orange and purple, and in height from the Bin Lilium parry! to the towering Bft Lilium gigantum. The Deal Cup for the best stem in the show was awarded to the president of the society (Mr R. Toon), for his Bellingham hybrid seedling.

The judge (Mr J. Watling) said that many exhibitors were interested in the new vases which were specially designed for showing lilies.
