DEAD TROUT IN STREAM
Weed Poison Blamed
Dead fish were found in the Waimairi stream yesterday, Mr N. I. Voyce told the council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society last evening. When dead fish were found in the Wairarapa stream recently, the cause was found to be the washings from the Waimairi County Council’s weed-poisoning tank, he said. “The county is still spraying the sides of roads with weed poison, and in most cases some of the poison flows eventually into the streams in the area,” said Mr Voyce. “We should ask our fleh committee to investigate the poisons being used,’’ he said. “Perhaps we should seek the aid of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. “There is a need for the fullest inquiry by this society, and ail acclimatisation societies, into the types of weed poisons being used in this country. This problem could be very serious in its effect on our fish population.” The meeting decided to ask its fish committee to investigate and report on the matter.
