MOTORWAY APPROVED
Western Hutt Road (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 11. The National Roads Board today approved the construction of a new motorway along the west bank of the Hutt river north of the Silverstream bridge to link up with the State highway south of Te Marua. Traffic volume in the area was now 9500 vehicles a day, said a report to the board, and it was expected to double by 1977.
Part of the course of the Hutt river will be shifted eastwards to allow the motorway to be formed on the embankment at the foot of the high west bank. The plan given to the board showed the route heading for an ultimate improvement in the Rimutaka hill route, which is still under investigation. New crossings and interchanges at Silverstream and Upper Hutt were detailed.
Liquor Offences. — For being on licensed premises after hours Laurence Tozer, Albert Edward Fox, David McKenzie Roche and John James McGifford were each fined £3 by Mr A. P. Blair, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Lyttelton yesterday.
