WARNING TO PRESS

Tho Defends Himself

(N .Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)

SAIGvN, Dec. 10. South Vietnam's provisional Prime Minister, Nguyen Ngoc Tho, today called a press conference to defend himself against criticisms and allegations made in kxjal and foreign press reports. Alternately thumping the table and cracking jokes, the Prime Minister bluntly warned the local press that if it did not exercise responsibility in its reporting “the Government will have to take steps to meet the situation.” The Prime Minister reserved the greater part of his press conference to denying a charge which has long been held against him by the public, and which has been published recently in press reports that he was responsible for luring an important religious sect leader into a trap in 1956 by promising him safe conduct and then having him killed. Prime Minister Tho also denied reports that the provisional civilian military government which he heads is under the control of the Military Revolutionary Council.

“This is sheer fabrication, it’s a lie,” he said. “If I want to spend a penny I don’t have to ask the Military Revolutionary Council."
