Defence Cost Reduction
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Dec. 8. “Significant reductions” in defence and other staff, which would cut 1500 million dollars from the defence budget this fiscal year, and which would save 4000 million dollars a year by mid-19f15, will be made.
Nine thousand aliens working in overseas military establishments, will be dismissed; there will be a 10 per cent cut in staff at military missions and military assistance groups abroad; and a cut of 2500 in overseas headquarters staffs by June, 1964, is envisaged also. Defence Department civilian employees will be reduced to 997,000 by July 1, 1965. This is 25,000 below the ceiling set some months ago for the end of the present fiscal year in June.
