RACING N.Z. HORSES RIVALS
Santa Anita Handicap
Mr Victor Graber, erf Oakland, California, will have his colours carried by two New Zealand-bred horses in the 100,000-dollar Santa Anita Handicap, to be run in the United States a few days before Christmas. One will be Desert Chief and the other Cadiz. This was revealed in a letter from Mr Graber received yesterday by the Riccarton owner-trainer, Mr J. F. Tutton, who negotiated the purchase of Desert Chief. Mr Graber said he was delighted with the way Desert Chief had been shaping in preparation for his first race in America, a six-furlong sprint at Golden Gate Fields on December 12. The former New Zealand horse had already shown very good speed in training and recently ran half a mile in 49sec.
Cadiz also is coming right back to his best form. He ran a very good six furlongs last Friday to finish second at Golden Gate Fields. His winding-up race for the Santa Anita Handicap will be the San Francisco Handicap a nine-furlong event at Golden Gate Fields next Saturday Phoenician, which Mr Tutton bought on behalf of Mr Graber, will also be racing at Gate Fields on Saturday. He is engaged in a six furlong event.
Mr Graber says in his letter: "What a boom it would be for New Zealand-breds if Desert Chief or Cadiz happens to win the Santa Anita Handicap.”
