{T is not surprising to find younger members of the High School Old Boys' Athletic Club are showing prominence in field events, for the former University field events all-rounder, R G. Ball, is a teacher at Christchurch Boys’ High School and a member of the club The club is fortunate to gain the services of Bai! who has a knowledge of other events besides throwing specialities, having been the Canterbury decathlon champion a few years ago, A winner of national titles with the javelin, Ball also has the distinction of having won the Canterbury shot put title on 10 consecutive occasions. In the last year or two the club has been well served by the Freeman
brothers in the throwing events, notably by Terry, who last year set a Canterbury junior discus record with a distance of 156 ft Ilin. Now 18. Freeman can look forward to some stiff opposition this season and he may be hard put to retain his record as 17-year-old A. Mclntyre of the same club has already beaten Freeman's record with a throw of 161 ft 6jin. Mclntyre is competent with the heavier senior implement also and has had it out to 125 ft, which was about the Canterbury record distance when Ball came to Christchurch about 1954. Freeman has been concentrating on examinations and it may be some time before he attains top competition form.
