The Generous Scots
“Scottish restaurants seem to vie with Jewish restaurants in giving you more generous helpings of everything than any other restaurants I know, except possibly the German restaurants of the Mid-West. And nowhere else can I remember two porters refusing a tip on the ground that the other member of the party had tipped them first. In Dunkeld I bought some local bargains and did the customary arithmetic with American traveller’s cheques. I was on my way into the square when a Mrs McKay, who ran the shop, came rushing at me with the alarming news that I had figured wrong in her favour. She had the extra 7s in her hand.”— Alistair Cooke in a 8.8. C. broadcast.
