WARRANTS OF FITNESS

New Provisions Proposed Tests of tyres, exhaust systems, and additional powers for car testing authorities were suggestions from the North Island Motor Union considered by the council of the Automobile Association (Canterbury). The council resolved to accept the suggestions in principle, but to ask the South Island Motor Union to pass on to the N.I.M.U. the association’s view that a much more precise definition of the suggestions was essential.

The proposals, originally put forward by the Auckland association, were to give power to testing authorities to decline a warrant where a vehicle could very quickly be unsafe, to require the testing of exhaust systems for leaks and other defects, and to require the more adequate testing of tyres. The council agreed any such moves to assure roadworthiness were valuable, but the proposals as put forward were much too loosely worded.

Mr E. C. Champion said he felt it would be unsafe to accept the proposals worded as they were.
