SHIP HELD FOR DUES
Council Action At Kaiapoi A writ of attachment was fixed to the mast of the InterIsland Shipping Company’s vessel Toa by officers of the Kaiapoi Borough Council recently. The council claims more than £1685 from the company. This amount is unpaid wharfage dues in respect of the vessel’s visits to Kaiapoi since July. The writ was attached under Section HI of the Harbours Act, which states that a ship may be detained and kept by anyone authorised to collect dues until the dues are paid. The Toa is at present moored to the bank of the Kaiapoi river upstream of the wharves. It rests on the bottom at low tide. The act allows the shipping company seven days to pay the dues or to dispute payment. The Inter-Island Shipping Company has disputed the claims of the council within the prescribed time. Negotiations have been carried out between the company and the council but as yet no solution has been reached. If the company had not made a move within the seven days the council would have been at liberty to sell the vessel to defray expenses.
