LATE NIGHT SHOPPING

Change To Be Considered A general meeting of the Canterbury Shop Assistants’ Union is to consider ways of varying the award to allow changes in late shopping nights at Christmas. Some members of the union want to have New Year’s Eve late shopping night transferred to December 17. The union itself contends that such a move would not be legal. A fortnight ago, a union member, Mr D. W. Donnelly, sent a letter to the union secretary (Mr P. M. Velvin) signed by 21 members. Mr Velvin has advised that a meeting will be held at a date yet to be fixed. The secretary of the Canterbury Retailers’ Association (Mr N. M. West) said that in July the association asked the union to transfer the late night from New Year’s Eve to December 17. in terms of the award. “To date we have not received an official reply from the union,” he said.
