RANDOM REMINDER
OVERSIGHT
Night trotting began in Christchurch last evening, and it was no doubt a great occasion for followers of the light harness sport. For a good many of them, every meeting is a sort of reunion. They love to see their friends there, to discuss prospects, to recall good old days and good old dividends.
Christchurch, of course, is behind Greymouth in the introduction of trotting at night, and the first night at Greymouth was an occasion for a great getting-together of enthusiasts. Some even came from Christchurch
for the event. One of those who went was a man who had been in business on the West Coast, and who looked forward eagerly to renewing old acquaintance when he went for the opening night. Of course when he got there quite early in the day he ran into many old friends, and they exchanged reminiscences sipping schooners, as was only right and proper. The man had his wife with him and they ate dinner at their hotel. Then he went up to change to go the race meeting and he followed the common practice of
sitting on the bed to unlace his shoes. A little later his wife came in, dressed in her finest, and he asked, rather unnecessarily, if she was ready. She said she was. They fell to discussing prospects for the first race. She said his choice was useless. They debated other possibilities, and he was somewhat surprised to detect a note of authority in her comments. “Well,” he said “Come on, then, we'll go and see some races.” “That will be nice,” she said. “I'm just back from watching all eight of them.”
