ERROR IN A-PLANT

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON. November 20. Workmen were taken from the advanced gas-cooled reactor at Windscaie atomic energy works, Sellafield, Cumberland, when warning instruments picked up readings of “high level” radiation atom rays escaping four days ago. The cause was an irradiated fuel stringer—a collection of 18-inch long elements —which had accidentally been put in the wrong test hole. The plant is now Operating again at full power. There was no contamination. The reactor was shut down while scientists worked inside. Later, everyone who had been involved was checked fcr radiation.

Georgian palaeobiologists have found fossil imprints of leaves of Virginia creepers in sandstone laid down five million years ago. The leaves show no changes from the Virginia creeper growing in the area today.
