Training Hotel Staff
CNew Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON. Nov. 20. Technical training in many branches of the hotel and catering trade—from housemaiding to hotel management —may be available in New Zealand’s four main centres before long. A special committee appointed by the Director of Education (Mr A. E. Campbell) is expected to make recommendations to the Education Department on the subject today, the Superintendent of Technical Education (Dr. B. C. Lee) has advised. Training provision has been under consideration since July, when a meeting of interested parties, including hotel organisations and catering concerns, was called by the Education Department. It resolved that the Director of Education be invited to set up a committee to investigate training needs and recommend some form of training scheme. The prospect of a comprehensive training scheme is welcomed by the Director of the Tourist Department’s
travel division (Mr R. S. Austin). “The establishment in New Zealand of training schools for hotel staff will definitely be a move in the right direction,” he said today. “It will be in line with practice in some overseas countries where tourism is recognised as an important earner of foreign currency."
