Widespread Gains By N.Z. Shares

Shares in 28 New Zealand companies—the longest daily list for many weeks —advanced in brisk trading on New Zealand stock exchanges yesterday. Over-all twice as many New Zealand shares improved as fell back, but most of the gains were made by lesser issues.

The unlisted Rothmans, with an Ils rise, headed the gains. Hay’s notes, in first business since the announcement of their proposed conversion next year, were 5s 9d higher than in last business. Losses by New Zealand shares were small.

Overseas issues were mainly steady. The main movement was a Is 6d gain by Colonial Sugar.
