Bellajily Causes Upset In N.Z. Derby Stakes
Bellajily caused a major upset when she beat the colts, Wildwood Chief, Peerswick and Lochgair, in a thrilling finish to the New Zealand Derby Stakes at Addington last night. Bellajily, after being a good way from the lead in the middle stages, raced up three wide from the half-mile and was four wide racing to the straight. She fought on gamely in a hard finish and won by the narrowest of margins.
Bellajily, a bay by Van Dieman from MalabeUa. is raced by her Christchurch breeder. Mir N. Matyasevic for whom she is trained at Templeton by C. C. Devine. She was driven by D. JTownley, who won the race with Rupee in 1952, as Devine has not fully recovered from injuries received in a race fall last- Frid Bellajily is the first filly to win the race since Scottish Lady was successful m 1942 and she is only the sixth of her sex to win since the race was first run at Addington in 1925. Wildwood Chief did well to finish second, while the pacemaker, Peerswick. showed courage to hold third, just si lead of Lochgair, which was pushed back at the start and showed outstanding ability. Bellajily paced the mile and a half in the smart time of 3min 12 3-ssec. The leaders took Imin 1 3-seec for the last half-mile, and 29 4-seec for the final quarter. La Scala. Scottish Advance Henot and Lochgair lost ground at the start, Peerswick leading out from Lottery Song, Khraizon, Full Sovereign (ttiree wide'. Falstaff. Space Cadet. Wild- 1 wood Chief. Grande Garnison and Bellajily. with two lengths to Lochgair and Melanka. There was little change until the half-mile, at which sL-ge Bellajily' was beginning to imnrove Peerswick led with Khraizcn on the insde of Lottery Song. Full -Sovereign and Bellajily Loch-i gair and Wildwood Chief w ere showing up wide out with Grand Garnison blocked fcr room on the inner. Peerswick was joined first by Bellajilv, and then byWildwooa Chief, with Lochgair closing on all of them. In a keen finish Bellajily beat Wildwood Chief by a nose, with half a head to Peerswick. a length to Lort’-i gair. and short gaos to Grande Garnison. Full Sovereign. Khmizon and lottery Song, which we-e followed by Melanion. Snare Cadet and Fakstaff Outstanding Orbiter gained his fourth
I win for the season in dashing style in the D. F. Glanville Handicap. Stand In set a scorching pace which spread the field over more then half a furlong. Jilaire ' was in second place, with Orbiter next. The field began to close on Stand In and Orbiter was pulled to the outside of Jilaire at the six furlongs. Stand In led Orbiter by half a length racing to the straight, with a length to Jilaire and two to Garcon d'Or. the only other with much chance. Orbiter strode past Stand In without effort inside the furlong and he did not have to be given full rein to win by more than two lengths. Jilaire battled on for second, a length and a half in front of Stand In. Garcon d'Or. which was pushed back at the start, was more than three lengths back fourth, clear of Napoleon Hanover. Sand Drift and Soanfra. Loyal Brigade, Prinsuva, Napoleon Hanover, Mossman and Fernside Lad gave ground at the start. Deserved Win Astralight, a place-getter in his two earlier starts at the meeting, gained a deserved win in the Certissimus Handicap. He was patiently driven throughout by W. R. Butt, who kept him about ninth until the last three furlongs. He improved sharply from this point and was on the outside of Robert Medoro and Grand Charge, not far behind the pace maker, Anak, racing to the straight. Then, close up. came Lucky Song, Fiametta. Nimble Grattan and Flying Maiden, with Doctor Kyle wide out. Anak looked to have the field in trouble on straightening up, b it he began to shorten stride tome 60 yards from the post. Astralight ran on in grand style and won by a short neck. Anak battled on for second, half a neck in front of Grand Charge, which did not receive a good run in the straight. Fiammetta made up ground to dead-heat for fourth vzith Robert Medoro. which covered extra ground. They were a neck behind Grand
Charge and closely attended by Doctor Kyle, Nimble Grattan, Lucky Song and Minnow, which was twice badly checked. Witch Doctor, which was pulled up, Tarseal. Frogman, Adee and Dubbo made mistakes. Overdue | Cheta. a costly failure in ■ some of his earlier racing | this season, made an overdue return to winning form in the Hayward Handicap. He was prominently placed about third or fourth all the way. He followed Terrace Dale, Raft and Dark Louise into the straight, with Gay Robin, Bobcat, Dyson, Bonnieburn- and Notify handy. Cheta took a short lead I inside the furlong, with i Bobcat challenging along the inner. Cheta responded gamely and won by a head. Bobcat came to the end of his run just short of the post, but lasted for second, a neck in front of Raft, with Dark Louise only a length back fourth. Monapat made ground for fifth, ahead of Gay Robin and Milngavie. Milngavie, Cushie Doo, Gay Robin, Monapat and Autumn Folly gave ground at the start, ‘ Sprint To Marquess j Marquess saved supporters ' of his more favoured bracki eted mate. Chiffon, when he won the Express Handicap iHe received a perfect trail . behind Johnny Thunder, j which set a fair pace. Gold Globe was on the outside of I Johnny Thunder racing to the straight, with Van Rush on the outside of Marquess, ahead of Ahumai, Inglemead and Trade Fair. Van Rush joined the leaders at the furlong and looked likely to win until Marquess pushed his way through the middle of the leading bunch. Marquess finished boldly and won by a head. Van Rush held second. a neck in front of Inglemead. with the same distance ;to Chiffon, which made U P ground. Johnny Thunder was right up fifth, shading Ahumai. with Trade Fair and i Antonius next. Autumn Folly. Chiffon, Kyle View. Antonius, RemI branch, and Garrison Royal igave ground at the start
