OFFICERS’ WAGES

Increase For Some

The salaries of some City Council traffic officers were increased by the council last evening. The awards committee reported that the conditions of appointment provided that no secondary employment could be undertaken without the council’s prior approval. Several officers had asked permission to accept secondary employment to meet financial commitments, particualriy during the stage when they were on the lower steps of the salary scale. The Government Transport Department b&d eliminated the first step in the Public Service scale, the committee said. To bring the scales into line, the salaries of about 20 officers not yet on the sixth-year step would be affected at a cost for the whole of a financial year of about £BB3. The council agreed that the commencing rate be the second-year step and that officers on the tliird, fourth and fifth-year steps be moved up one step.
