Falsely Claimed He Was Assaulted By Policeman
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Nov. 19. A man who alleged he had been knocked over and kicked by a police constable was fined £l5 today by Mr M. C. Astley, S.M., for making a false statement to the police. Harold Fraser, aged 40, a workman, of Panmure, pleaded not guilty to the charge. Senior-Sergeant R. A. Austin said Fraser called at the Otahuhu police station on September 23. In a statement, he said that when he was arrested by the Panmure police on September 20 for drunkenness, he had been handcuffed and knocked to the ground. He claimed he
had been kicked two or three times by a policeman. Garvey Kanitoa said he was standing on the top step at the entrance to the Panmure police station when a patrol car drew up. Two constables, one a Maori, got out. Another man who was handcuffed got out of the car and the three walked into the station. Kanitoa said he could see them walking into the station quite clearly. Nothing happened. The Magistrate said it appeared Fraser had been treated much more leniently than he deserved. There had been no need for him to swear at the Maori constable, or spit on him.
