SWEPT INTO RIVER HOLE
Three Men Stranded (N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Nov. 17. After being swept into a deep hole in the swollen Dart river and discarding their packs with all their belongings, including money, to save themselves, three young men spent Saturday night huddled on a sand bank in the middle of the river. Anthony James Watson, aged 24. a farmhand, of 3 Manchester street, Wellington, Lawrence Norman Brown, aged 18, a workman, of the same address, and Anthony William Charles Barlow, aged 19, a farmhand, of 170 Marine parade, New Brighton, attempted to cross the river, but not at the recognised crossing place. Swept into the hole, they discarded their packs and struggled to the sand bank where they were stranded until the river level fell a little this morning.
