ICE CREAM CHIMES

Sunday Ban Sought PRETORIA. Ice-cream vendors in Pretoria may soon be seen and not heard on Sundays. After a complaint by a church parish, the City Council is expected to ban the chimes and bells of icecream vans and bicycles on Sundays. The parish alleges preachers have to raise their voices to make themselves heard above the shrill ringing of the ice-cream vendor’s bell. A city councillor for the ward had a heart attack when he went out to still the noise, and would suffer the consequences of the attack for the rest of his life, the parish alleges. On Sunday afternoon “just about the only day in the week when a person can rest"—people were awakened by ice-cream bells just as they were dozing off. Children spent their Sunday school collection on ice-cream on the way to church. The parish adds that the •piling of ice-cream is not an essential service, and that it is the duty of the council to sanctify the “day of the Lord.” Several months ago the council banned the “audible advertising" of ice-cream on Sundays between 9 a.m. and noon.
