18 Players To Make New Zealand Soccer History
FIVE-WEEK WORLD TOUR IN MARCH JTGHTEEN players and four officials will leave next March on the first world soccer tour undertaken by a New Zealand soccer team. The five-week itinerary includes matdies in Hong Kong, the United States, Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Israel and Malaysia. Pen pictures of the players and officials are:
A. Stroud ’Auckland l : goalkeeper; aged 28, sft ICn, 13st; bom in Scotland and played for Arbroath in Scottish first division; arrived to New Zealand in January and helped North Shore win Chatham Cup and Rothmans tournament last season Insurance xiapector.
R. Mcßrtar (Wellington) full back; aged 27, sft 9jin, list 71b. centre half; can play at full-back and inside forward; Wellington representative last season; produced excellent form in second trial to gain selection. Transport worker.
R. Moore (Wellington): aged 29. sft lliin. 12st, centre-forward; dangerous, determined leader, who scored 64 joals last season; has represented Auckland, Canterbury and Wellington, and played senior amateur soccer in England. Insurance inspector.
P. L. Whiting (Wellington): goalkeeper; aged 24, Oft. 13st: came to New Zealand when he was 10 and has played for Wellington in all grades; senior representative since 1958, and New Zealand's goalkeeper since 1931; brilliant positional play. Customs agent.
K. Sudlow (Auckland); full-back; aged 30, sft lOin, list 131 b, left-half; Auckland representative in 1962 and 1963, ur ball well to make openings for his forwards and has hard shot; strong tackler. Airman.
T. J. L. Pugh (Poverty Bay); Aged 26, sft 7in, lOst 71b, utility forward, had brilliant debut for New Zealand against New Caledonia in 1962; a Welshman, played for British Territorial Army; centre-forward or right-wing, strong and determined. Teacher.
G. P. Bilby (Wellington): half-back; aged 22. sft Bin, lOst 71b, right-half; good utility player and all-round sportsman; played soccer and cricket for Wellington last season, scoring century in Plunket Shield debut; links up well with his forwards. Clerk.
R. D. Ormond (Auckland): Aged 32, sft 6Jin, lOst 71b, inside-left; former Scottish professional, most complete forward in New Zealand and can play in any position; brilliant ball player, and ideal captain for the tour. Master painter.
J. G. Kemp (Auckland): half-back; aged 23, sft 9in, list 41b, centre-half; played for Auckland since 1959 and for New Zealand since 1960; also Plunket Shield cricketer for Auckland; strong, positional player; vice-cap-tain for tour. Clerk.
J. J. Ryan (Wellington): Aged 29, sft 6in, 12st, out-side-left; Wellington and North Island representative; fast, tricky winger, with excellent ball distribution; established provincial player last season, playing 10 times for Wellington. Foreman.
J. F. Lawson (Wellington!: half-back; aged 23, sft Ilin, list 71b, right-half; newcomer to New Zealand and played for Wellington last season; forceful, attacking wing-half, likes to play up with his forwards; outstanding in trials. Engineer.
D. Torkington (Canterbury): Aged 21, sft 7in, lOst 31b, outside-left; recently transferred to Wellington, only South Island player in party; inside-forward or wing, deceptively fast and direct in front of goal; Canterbury, South Island representative. Bank clerk.
J. A.'Evans (Wellington': full-beck; aged 23, sft 7}in, list 31b, right-back; Wellington and New Zealand representative 1962-63; strong, constructive defender who can also play at wing-half; tackles with determination and positions himself skilfully. Factory manager.
H. B. Rusell (Auckland): aged 24, sft 64in, 9st, outside right; represented Wanganui in all divisions, moved to Auckland in 1962; member of triumphant North Shore team last season; fast, direct winger, with ability to inter-change positions. Accountant.
A. W. Leong (Waikato): full-back; aged 32, sft sjin, ICst 61b, left-back; experienced defender, cool under pressure, who uses the ball intelligently; played for New Zealand since 1959 and has been consistent representative for Waikato; also plays centre-half. Teacher.
A. Inglis (Wellington): aged 27, sft 6in, lOst, insideright; brilliant inside-for-ward, capable of splitting open the tightest defence with slide-rule passes; New Zealand reprsentative since 1961 and was outstanding in trials. Engineer.
S. C. Scott (Welhngtoft): full-back; aged 23, sft ftjin. list 51b, left-back; attackdefender with experience at inside-forward; scored the winning goal with 45-yard shot for Wellington against Canterbury last season; strong, close tackler. Transport worker.
A. J. Sefton (Poverty Bay): aged 21, sft Ilin, 12st 21b, inside-right: surprise choice but revealed great potential as goal-scoring forward at trials: played for Poverty Bay this season and it is thought his ability will grow during the tour. Journalist.
