“POLICY FOR YEARS”
Union Backs Shearers (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Nov 11. The New Zealand Workers' Union supported a shearers’ decision to seek higher rateg of pay and an eight-hour day, its secretary (Mt H J. Allen) said today. A decision to seek £5 10s for each 100 sheep instead of the present minimum of £3 13s Bd, and an eight-hour day starting ait 730 am. instead of S a.m., wm made by a meeting of sheerer* nt Marton on Saturday. Mr Allen sasd the remits passed by the meeting had been the policy of the union (to which the shearers belong) for a number of years He would prefer to see a settlement with Federated Farmers reached in conciliation council, but if an application to the Arbitration Court was necessary, it would have to be done. The remits will be placed before the union's annual conference next June.
