RANDOM REMINDER

BIG DEAL

It is about this time of the year that depressing announcements are made about the astonishingly few shopping days left before Christmas or, for the sweet sake of brevity and cost, Xmas. And all the organised planning seldom comes to much, and there is all the customary hurrying and scurrying in the last few days. But if opportunity, in this matter, certainly knocks more than once, it will not knock much louder than it does today. For it is today that the Sumner-Redcliffs branch of the Navy League holds its annual Christmas Fair and

jumble sale at T. S. Cornwell. This occasion has won an enviable reputation among those who have a keen eye for a good buy, and it certainly offers a chance to make some useful purchases for the Christmas period ahead. There are those, too, who will want to support the fair and sale simply because of the splendid work of this organisation in giving boys a knowledge of the sea, and training in them in even more important matters, such as citizenship. From the purely practical ooint of view, there will be much of interest in the goods at the stalls

—the work stall, the fancy goods, clothing, cakes and sweets. And of course there will be a white elephant stall, which is in itself a fascinating study in human habits and behaviour. It is there one may find almost every sort of flotsam and jetsam from the tides of man, except the mother-in-law—and no doubt a few of those would be there, if there was any prospect of a ready sale. There will also be a lucky dip and amusements, and, across the road, a new children’s playground. It really could make Christmas easier.
