PRESIDENCY RACE
Rockefeller A Starter (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) NASHUA (New Hampshire), Nov. 8. Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York state has announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the Presidency and swung immediately into a handshaking campaign. He opened his “blitz" campaign in New Hampshire, where the first Presidential primary will be held next March. Mr Rockefeller, aged 55, the first avowed 1964 Presidential contender, coupled his longexpected announcement with a challenge to Senator Barry Goldwater (Republican, Arizona) to oppose him in State primaries. Mr Rockefeller also unleashed an attack on President Kennedy. Mr Rockefeller acknowledged—and most Republican leaders agreed—that he was the underdog for the Republican nomination against Mr Goldwater, who has not yet declared himself a candidate. Mr Rockefeller’s public declaration of his White House ambitions came five months and three days after he married the former Mrs Margaretta Murphy, Many had said that Rockefeller’s divorce from his first wife and his subsequent remarriage would ruin his political career.
