FOOD PRICES HIGHER
8-Point Rise Last Month Food prices rose 8 points, or 0.7 per cent to 1160 last month, according to the consumers’ price index. This figure is 4.7 per cent above the comparable 1962 figure. The Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker) says that meat and fish prices contributed 6| points to the rise. Fruit, vegetables and eggs eased quarter of a point and other foods rose 21 points. Beef meat items (4 points), mutton (2), potatoes <6|) and sweets and confectionery (2) were the main items which rose; seasonal fruits and vegetables (1) and eggs fell.
The International Transport Workers’ Federation executive will give “maximum support” to any economic boycott organised by the United Nations against the present South African Government.—London, November 8.
