Wellington’s Wool Sale Best Since 1951

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 8. Wellington’s one-day wool sale today was its best since the 1950-51 boom season, with prices well up on the second best, in the 1956-57 season. Nine bales of AA Southdown wool brought the top price for many seasons—Bo}d per lb—and the average for the whole day—about 60d per lb, or £9O a bale—was well up on Auckland’s last Monday.

Numerous good lots brought prices in the top sixties and seventies, and the official statement quoted a 2| per cent firming on Auckland. Shorn hogget wools predominated in the fleece offering, which in the main was well grown with liltle discoloration. A fair selection of early-shorn and second-shear wools w-as also on hand. The most marked rises occurred in Southdown and Down Cross wools, oddments and crutchings. Competition for the 25.480 bales was brisk right into the evening, with Bradford more active than in past weeks. At least one broker with agencies for Iron Curtain countries was prominent, and there were strong rumours thait the Chinese as well as the Russians were operating through agents. The Continent was active, and both the United States and Japan were prominent.
