CHARITABLE JUSTICE

Mock Court At Lyttelton Many prominent citizens of Lyttelton were brought to trial at a mock court held in London street early on Friday evening. Strains of music from the “Darktown Band” attracted hundreds of persons to the hearing and a busy police “riot squad” made about 40 arrests.

Speedy justice was meted by Mr N. E. Kirk. M.P. for, Lyttelton, who was on the bench.

The Mayor (Mr J. B. Collett). and several borough councillors were among those brought to trial and released upon the payment of a fine. A taxidriver was fined tor opening the door of his taxi for a woman and a grocer was fined for selling his own lunch as a special. A men's outfitter, who did not appear, was fined for undressing a dummy in his shop window and a plumber was convicted for brazing two “coppers” together. A hotel licensee was charged with serving drinks at five times his normal speed. The Lyttelton branch of the St. John Ambulance will I benefit from the court, which was organised by the newlyformed Lyttelton Round Table, assisted by the Lyttelton Marine Band.
